A driver on the Taichung stretch of National Freeway 1 refused to yield to an ambulance transferring a premature infant to Taichung General Veterans Hospital.
Video script:
An ambulance bound for Taichung General Veterans Hospital encountered unexpected opposition when an SUV refused to move out of its way. The incident occurred on National Freeway 1 south of Taichung’s Daya district, as the ambulance was in the middle of transporting a premature baby from Miaoli General Hospital to Taichung General Veterans Hospital. Despite the flashing lights, horn honking, and even tailgating from the emergency vehicle, the SUV made no move to get out of the way, instead blocking the path for some time– leaving other drivers shocked.
Blocking an emergency vehicle is against the law. Drivers who do not immediately clear a path face an NT$3,600 fine (about US$111), and could have their driver’s license revoked. The local police reminded the public that these vehicles only use their sirens in emergencies, and must be treated with due urgency.
The inside lane must give way to emergency vehicles– especially cars encountering fire trucks and ambulances on the national highway. Never force an ambulance onto the road shoulder, as the slope and gravel could affect rescue equipment and efforts inside the vehicle.
Fortunately, the baby in the ambulance was able to receive treatment despite the hiccup in getting there, and the driver blocking the way is likely to lose their license.
