Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) gave his first policy address to the Legislature on Friday, outlining the government’s top priorities moving forward and commenting on the public response to the Legislature passing controversial amendments.

Regarding the disputed legislation, Cho said parts of the amendment are difficult to implement given their unconstitutional nature. Therefore, further analysis must be carried out in accordance with the law.

In his address, Cho discussed plans to realize President Lai-Ching-te’s (賴清德) goals of innovation, prosperity, and justice for the creation of a sustainable, democratic, and peaceful nation. He outlined the government’s top priorities, including the “five strike” plan against corruption, organized crime, guns, drugs, and fraud. He also encouraged the Legislature to pass the four anti-fraud laws proposed on May 9 as soon as possible so law enforcement will have the necessary legal tools to curb fraud-related crime.

Additionally, Cho commented on the nation’s objective of transitioning to net-zero emissions by the year 2050. He said the government will invest NT$900 billion (US$27.7 billion) by 2030 toward sustainable domestic and foreign development.

Regarding cross-strait relations, Cho said the government will continue adhering to former President Tsai Ing-wen’s (蔡英文) “Four Commitments” in exchanges with China in hopes that China will realize that cross-strait peace serves the interests of both states. The action plan includes a strengthened national defense, improved economic security, stable and principled cross-strait leadership, and values-based diplomacy.
