The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on Wednesday that a man in Mexico with prior health complications died in April after contracting the A(H5N2) strain of bird flu. The Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (CDC) on Thursday issued a Level 1 Travel Health Notice for Mexico.
According to the WHO, the 59-year-old man died in Mexico City in April after developing symptoms including a fever, shortness of breath, diarrhea, and nausea. The WHO said despite this being the first confirmed human case of contracting influenza A(H5N2) virus, the risk of the bird flu virus to the general public is low.
Taiwan CDC Spokesperson Tseng Shu-hui (曾淑慧) said on Thursday that the CDC learned of the case on May 31 and has since been closely monitoring the situation. Tseng reminds travelers from Taiwan to Mexico to implement hand hygiene and notify logical health authorities should they experience related symptoms.
