Economic Minister J.W. Kuo (郭智輝) confirms Taiwan’s nuclear-free homeland policy has not changed. Kuo spoke in response to questions from the Legislature regarding the possible extension of nuclear power plant use after recent electricity issues and cost increases.

In a legislature interview on Friday, Kuo stated that keeping nuclear power onboard or as a backup option is not under consideration. He said that Taipower's recent price hikes and increased spending on green power are primarily caused by the Russia-Ukraine war and its effect on world power resources.

Kuo also addressed the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s concerns about the stability of Taiwan’s green energy, saying that they are unnecessary and the previously planned green power supply is sufficient. He said that nuclear energy will only become a viable option when there is a consensus on nuclear safety and waste processing.

Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) additionally emphasized that energy efficiency and sustainability are goals jointly pursued by the DPP and the Cabinet and will continue to be a focus of discussion.
