On Monday’s Dragon Boat Festival holiday, President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) uploaded a new video on his YouTube channel featuring immigrants teaching him how to make different varieties of zongzi, or sticky rice dumplings. Lai thanked them for their contributions to the country and assured them he would look after all immigrant groups in Taiwan.
In the special episode, Lai traveled to Baoshan Township in Hsinchu County and learned how to assemble and wrap Vietnamese cylindrical zongzi and Malaysian Nyonya zongzi. New immigrants shared their culture and experiences working in Taiwan.
Lai visited Xincheng Fengtang Leisure Park to check on community elders and meet with Chinese immigrants Wang Ling-feng (王翎鳳) and her husband Li Rong-feng (李榮峯) who run the park. During Lai’s tenure as Premier, Wang and Li set up a community service base in Baoshan and planned the park’s development based on Lai’s regional revitalization policy. The park features a sugarcane orchard and allows visitors to partake in food farming activities and do-it-yourself workstations for creating sugarcane juice or popsicles.
The DPP said Lai intends to implement new immigrant policies that incorporate cultural exchange, foundational care, and related seminars in an effort to establish a mutually beneficial relationship between immigrants and the local community.
