The Foreign Ministry has urged Taiwanese citizens to be aware of strict regulations governing alcohol consumption in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). On Tuesday, the ministry announced that several Taiwanese visitors to Dubai have faced legal repercussions for violating alcohol regulations.
Several direct flights run from Taiwan to Dubai. Due to the ease of travel, more Taiwanese are visiting Dubai for both business and tourism. However, recent incidents of Taiwanese citizens entering inappropriate venues or violating alcohol regulations have resulted in police inspections, arrests, and deportations.
According to the Foreign Ministry, Dubai enforces strict rules regarding alcohol. Vendors must hold a license to sell alcohol and individuals must be at least 21 years old to purchase or consume it. Also, alcohol consumption is restricted to licensed restaurants and shops, and drinking in public places or unlicensed venues is strictly prohibited.
The ministry urges citizens to adhere to local laws and respect customs when abroad. The ministry's website highlights that those working, residing, or traveling in the UAE should respect Islamic customs and avoid making critical comments.
