Many supermarkets have been launching food bento sales to help people budget more wisely.

As the prices of commodities rise, people throughout the country are having to pinch pennies to get by. According to recent data released by the Cabinet’s Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics, the average monthly irregular wage in April was NT$46,321 (US$1,432). This level of frugality is thus a necessity in today’s economic reality.

Despite the tight budget for many employees, luxury dining establishments like Din Tai Fung are still thriving. With each xiaolongbao soup dumpling priced at NT$3 (US$0.1) and a staggering NT$30 (close to US$1) increase for their pork chop fried rice, a simple meal at Din Tai Fung now costs a hefty NT$310 (close to US$10).

Despite rising costs, there are still some great deals to be found. For instance, at supermarkets, expiring bento boxes are sold at clearance prices, some as low as NT$19 (US$0.60). This attracts bargain hunters, although some advise against purchasing these heavily discounted meals, fearing they might deprive others of the opportunity.

Even larger retailers like Carrefour are joining the trend, offering discounts on their ready-to-eat meals before closing time, sometimes at half price. The rush for these discounted meals is evident, with many selling out within the hour.

Similarly, convenience stores like FamilyMart are promoting their discounted ready-to-eat meals during specific hours with a generous 30% discount from morning to evening, and again from late evening until midnight. With such attractive offers, consumers are making the most of every opportunity to save money.
