Up to 95% of college students plan to work this summer, the highest percent in 13 years, according to survey results released by an online resource firm this Wednesday. The top five most highly sought-after part-time jobs are those at, in order, Eslite Bookstore, McDonald’s, Starbucks, Louisa Coffee, and 7-Eleven.
The survey, carried out by job hunting site yes123, sampled 1,272 individuals and 1,022 companies. Students cited living expenses, tuition, and savings as the main motivators behind seeking employment over the summer.
Of the companies surveyed, 44.2% said they had a need for summer part-time employees, higher than last year’s percentage of 43.1%. The average hourly wage offered has increased to NT$206.1 (US$6.37) this year, with 5.8% of the companies offering hourly wages of over NT$300 (US$9.27).
Yang Tsung-pin (楊宗斌), spokesperson for yes123, reminds students to be wary of employment traps and unsafe working environments. Yang also recommends employers provide training and insurance to protect against occupational accidents.
