Taiwan’s economic outlook is bright, according to President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) at a magazine media event on Friday. The president emphasized that the economy was one of former President Tsai Ing-wen’s (蔡英文) top policy priorities and will remain an important focus of the new government.
Lai said the collective efforts of the Taiwanese people have propelled Taiwan to become the 21st largest economy and ninth in global trade volume. Taiwan’s GDP is valued at NT$23 trillion (US$711.3 million) and its stock market value has surpassed even that of Germany. He said that Taiwan is now at a unique juncture where favorable timing, geographical advantage, and harmonious conditions are aligning. Lai emphasized that so long as Taiwanese people unite, have confidence, and continue to work hard, future economic development will be positive.
The president elaborated that with the onset of the fully integrated smart era, Taiwan can definitely contribute its own strength to the prosperity and development of the world. He said that with its outstanding performance in the technology industry, the international community pays special attention to Taiwan, especially its pivotal position in the global supply chain. In terms of geographical advantages, Lai added that democratic Taiwan stands on the front line against totalitarianism, and he hopes everyone will cooperate and work together for the country, the people, and the new world.
