President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) met with newly appointed American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) Director Raymond Greene in Taipei on Wednesday. Lai emphasized that in the face of China’s attempts to change the status quo in the Taiwan Strait, Taiwan will continue to collaborate with the U.S. and like-minded countries to promote regional prosperity.
President Lai thanked the U.S. for its ongoing support, including the Biden administration's 15th military sales announcement. Lai highlighted plans to deepen economic and trade relations, including advancing the second phase of the 21st Century Trade Initiative negotiations and resolving double taxation issues. Lai also said he hopes for more exchanges and cooperation in AI and innovation to establish Taiwan as an AI hub. He also acknowledged Greene's familiarity and professionalism regarding Taiwan-U.S. affairs, expressing confidence in further strengthening relations.
Greene, who has previously served twice at AIT, noted the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait for the Indo-Pacific region and the world, affirming U.S. support for Taiwan's self-defense capabilities. He reiterated U.S. support based on the Taiwan Relations Act, the Three Joint Communiqués, and the Six Assurances guiding the one-China policy. Greene also expressed confidence in the enduring U.S.-Taiwan partnership and its role in safeguarding democracy and promoting prosperity.
