A public hearing on the present and future development of Taiwan’s aerospace industry took place on Monday (July 29) at the Legislature. The event was organized by DPP legislator Chung Chia-pin (鍾佳濱) with the participation of India Taipei Association (ITA), Taiwan Space Agency (TASA), the Industrial Technology Research Institute, and representatives from industries, government agencies and academia.

Chung suggested that, with Taiwan’s solid foundations in semiconductor, information technology and precision machinery, this is an opportunity not just to focus on the aerospace but also the aviation industry, incorporating satellites and rocket launching technology for future development of both industries.

In 2019, Taiwan passed phase 3 of the Long-term Development Plan for Aerospace Technology. Then in 2021, Taiwan listed aerospace as one of the six core strategic industries with the Legislature passing the first Taiwan Space Law and the Regulations on the Establishment of TASA in 2022. In the conference, TASA introduced the plan for future comprehensive aerospace projects, including not just telemetry and low-orbit communication satellites but also orbital rockets and building national launch sites.

ITA Director-General Manharsinh Laxmanbhai Yadav spoke at the event, saying that since 2017, India has launched 104 satellites and is committed to the development of “rocket transportation”. Yadav welcomed the participation of Taiwan’s private sector in Indian aerospace projects, including cooperation in developing launchers, satellite bodies, and ground receiving stations.
