To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Indigenous People’s renaming, a concert will be held on the afternoon of August 1 at Ketagalan Boulevard. Organized by the Indigenous Revival Alliance, a press conference was held on Monday to announce the event.
August 1, also known as Indigenous Peoples Day, marks the 1994 constitutional amendment when the term “Indigenous Peoples” replaced their previous name “Mountain Compatriots”. The change is significant for not only honoring Indigenous peoples as the original owners of the island nation but also for removing the discrimination inherent in the previous name.
The organizer said that 16 aboriginal groups wearing ethnic costumes will gather for the first time on Ketagalan Boulevard for the concert and bless Taiwan. The concert also will bring together different ethnic groups including Hakka and new immigrants among others to jointly bless Taiwan. They hope to foster a deeper understanding of Taiwan's Indigenous peoples among the broader public through the event.
