President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) received a returning Taiwanese delegation from the Shun Yi Association of North America on Tuesday. The group is recognized for its long-term efforts to promote Overseas Chinese affairs with U.S. Chinese communities.
In his address President Lai said that regardless of whether Taiwan is called the Republic of China, Taiwan, or the Republic of China-Taiwan, it represents the 23.5 million people of Taiwan, and unity is essential.
Lai says Taiwan's greatest challenge is China's refusal to renounce its intention to use force to unify with Taiwan. However, he assures that his administration is committed to implementing his plan to preserve peace in the Taiwan Strait. The plan hinges on four “pillars” which include strengthening national defense, enhancing economic resilience, aligning with democratic allies to prevent conflict, and achieving peace through strength.
Lai says Taiwan is committed to peace and offers generous aid to those affected by natural disasters. Lai also expressed a willingness for respectful dialogue and cooperation with China for mutual benefit and peaceful coexistence.
