A fisherman surnamed Hu (胡), who was detained in China for nearly five months, was returned safely Wednesday to his home in Kinmen, accompanied by KMT Legislator Chen Yu-jen (陳玉珍), his parents, and daughter.
Hu, along with another fisherman surnamed Wu (吳), originally got lost back in March when their boat lost power in heavy fog. The stranded pair was rescued by the Chinese coast guard. While Wu was speedily returned, Hu was detained for questioning on account of being an active military member at the time he was found.
The Mainland Affairs Council stated they were happy to see Hu return with no strings attached. The Council maintains the consistent stance that there should be no conditions attached when dealing with emergency rescue incidents. They emphasized that, in line with long-standing norms, maritime cross-strait rescue and repatriation should be done as soon as possible.
Legislator Chen accompanied Hu’s family to Xiamen on Wednesday and thanked all parties on both sides of the Strait for their assistance in the process. Hu, eager to return home, was greeted by his daughter who presented him with a handmade card, and her perfect score test paper. Hu’s father said now that his son is home, he can rest easy again having received his own “best Father’s Day gift”.
