The Central Weather Administration warned today that although Typhoon Ampil and Typhoon Wukong won’t affect the island, their effect on the weather is likely to bring heavy rains coinciding with the start of the Hungry Ghost Festival.

Of the two typhoons currently in the Pacific, Ampil continues moving north, likely affecting the east coast of Japan on Friday. The second, Wukong, is not expected to last long or have much impact. Travelers to and from Japan should mind conditions created by Ampil, while Taiwan in general will remain unaffected by the storms.

However, weather around the island is still unpredictable. In addition to Wednesday’s heavy thunderstorms, from Thursday to Saturday local heavy rain, and short-term heavy rain are expected in the western half of Taiwan and eastern mountainous areas. Central and southern regions should also expect localized thunderstorms and brief showers, with the south also experiencing localized heavy rains. Other areas of Taiwan are not out of the woods, with the trend of afternoon thunderstorms continuing with a chance of heavy rain, with northern Taiwan likely to experience scattered showers in the early morning to morning.

As Typhoon Ampil continues to move north, the southwesterly winds will pick up, so central and southern regions of Taiwan should pay special attention as it will coincide with the full moon and astronomical tides. Temperatures are expected to remain high during this time, between 33 to 35 degrees Celsius for the next few days, cooling down in the morning and evening.
