The U.S. Democratic National Convention is in full swing and the party has reaffirmed its support for Taiwan. The Democratic Party’s 2024 party platform includes, for the first time, a firm commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and references the Six Assurances to Taiwan.

Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry on Tuesday expressed appreciation for the stance.

Ministry spokesperson Jeff Liu (劉永健) says the platform clearly expresses the Democratic Party's firm support for Taiwan and underscores the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. Liu says maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait has increasingly become an international consensus.

The Democratic Party says it will continue investing in alliances to prevent China from coercing its neighbors or undermining the international rules that ensure the security and prosperity of the U.S. It adds that President Biden is committed to maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait in line with the U.S. One China policy, which is guided by the Taiwan Relations Act, the three Joint Communiqués, and the Six Assurances.

The Six Assurances, originally proposed by President Ronald Reagan in 1982, include the U.S. not setting a date for ending arms sales to Taiwan, not mediating between Taiwan and China, not pressuring Taiwan to negotiate with China, not changing its position on Taiwan's sovereignty, not altering the Taiwan Relations Act, and not consulting with China before making arms sales to Taiwan.
