President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) attended the showing of the General Assembly of Chinese Culture (GACC)’s film The Soul of the Craftsman on the eve of Armed Forces Day at the Presidential Office. The movie stars Navy Underwater Operations Unit (UOU) Sergeant Huang Chien-chih (黃建智). The President affirmed Huang’s skills and willpower and thanked the National Military for their continuous vigilance in defending Taiwan.
The UOU, affiliated with Navy Fleet 192, specializes in underwater cleaning inspections of ships, diving search and rescue, removal of underwater obstacles, salvage, and explosive ordnance disposal.
The film is the 51st episode in a series of movies aimed to introduce the many different roles within the military. Former President Tsai commended the film, saying that featuring Huang and other highly dedicated and skilled soldiers every year inspires public confidence and security. He also commented on the difficulties of Huang’s welding specifically, admiring his strong work ethic while wearing the 55-kilogram suit and managing the dual risks of diving and using powerful tools and electricity in current or low visibility water. Lai thanked Huang for his extraordinary contributions and pledged his support and appreciation for all the officers and soldiers of the Navy UOU for their hard work.
