This Friday the Foreign Ministry publicly responded to U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell’s remarks regarding the misinterpretation of United Nations Resolution 2758. Earlier this week, Campbell had stated that China is using the resolution to delegitimize Taiwan’s status in the UN at a congressional hearing.

The Foreign Ministry expressed gratitude for the public stance and called on the international community to take concrete actions to oppose China’s misinterpretation of the resolution that perpetuates the “One China” policy fallacy. The ministry noted that Campbell is among several other U.S. officials who have spoken out, including foreign policy analyst Rick Waters, State Department China Coordinator and East Asia and Pacific Affairs Bureau Deputy Assistant Secretary Mark Lambert, and East Asian and Pacific Affairs Assistant Secretary of State Daniel Kritenbrink.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson and Director General Jeff Y.J. Liu (劉永健) said that Taiwan isn’t mentioned in UN Resolution 2758 and therefore it has nothing to do with Taiwan. Liu stated that China has no right to represent Taiwan’s 23.5 million people at the UN.

The Foreign Ministry said that Taiwan will continue cooperating with the U.S. and other like-minded countries that uphold similar ideals to jointly maintain peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and Indo-Pacific region.
