The Culture Ministry’s Bureau of Cultural Heritage kicked off a two-day forum on Wednesday, inviting experts from the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), a key advisory body for UNESCO’s World Heritage program, to engage in dialogue about cultural asset preservation.

Six ICOMOS experts from the U.S., Australia, Japan, South Korea, and Canada arrived to share their experiences with local government, academic, and civil organizations. The forum includes case studies from Taiwan's own cultural assets, drawing on international experiences for guidance.

In a video address, ICOMOS President Teresa Patricio highlighted the importance of promoting dialogue, collaboration, and exchanges. Taiwan’s Cultural Minister Li Yuan (李遠) delivered a welcoming address at the opening ceremony, encouraging the international guests to experience Taiwan’s small yet ever-changing landscape during their visit.

Bureau of Cultural Heritage Director-General Chen Chi-Min (陳濟民) commented on the bureau’s hopes to continue aligning domestic cultural preservation practices with international standards. Chen said that while Taiwan is not currently able to apply for World Heritage status, it is working on strengthening ties with relevant international organizations and drawing on their expertise to enrich Taiwan’s cultural preservation efforts.
