Although Typhoon Krathon has yet to make landfall, its effects could already be felt in Taiwan. The Central Emergency Operations Center (CEOC) reported one person missing and 46 people injured on Wednesday.
Recent updates from the Central Weather Administration warn that Typhoon Krathon is now expected to make landfall on Thursday. Given the expected torrential rainfall, 11 counties and cities are conducting precautionary evacuations, with a total of 10,756 people evacuated so far.
A seawall has been damaged in Pingtung County causing seawater to flood inland. The Water Resource Agency has responded and Pingtung County Magistrate Chou Chun-Mi (周春米) reported that wave-dissipating blocks have been placed on-site.
Power systems have also been impacted due to the non-stop rain and 16,128 households have experienced power outages nationwide. While electricity in the majority of the households has been restored, two remain without power. Nine base stations were damaged with one still awaiting repairs. Landline services were also disrupted for 411 households who are waiting for repairs and restoration.
Interior Minister Liu Shyh-fang (劉世芳) reminded local government officials to closely monitor the situation and maintain regular communication with offshore islands and remote townships. The Labor Ministry was also tasked to remind migrant workers to avoid dangerous areas for their safety.
