The god of wealth was venerated by businesses on Friday, October 4th, with groups of workers offering food, drink, paper money, incense and other gifts. The popular ritual is marked by reciprocity and mutual obligation: humans and spirits are considered to exist through and depend upon each other in some way.
The propitiation of gods for wealth, however, also has another dimension that has been less acknowledged in writing. In various inquiries with employers and staff, engaging in the ritual was seen to contribute to group cohesion and promote cooperation between personnel.
As one participant remarked, popular religion is not mediated by an increase or decrease in faith. Those who worship will not be more fortunate than those who do not. The meaning of the group practice is in the communal function and the sharing between people.
