DPP Secretary-General Lin Yu-chang (林右昌) announced on Wednesday plans to visit Japan in early December on behalf of President Lai Ching-te (賴清德). This diplomatic mission aims to reinforce the strong relationship between Taiwan and Japan, especially as Japan concludes its elections in late October.
The announcement comes amidst reports of former President Tsai Ing-wen's (蔡英文) potential visit to the United States in the coming weeks, following her current European tour. Lin says Tsai’s visits elevated Taiwan's international profile to unprecedented levels, and any future visits by Tsai will positively impact Taiwan's global standing, despite anticipated objections from China.
Addressing concerns about how China might react to these diplomatic engagements, Lin stresses the importance of national unity. He argues that regardless of Taiwan’s actions, China will likely express dissatisfaction. Lin suggests that a more confident and united Taiwan could effectively counter China’s strategies, urging solidarity among Taiwanese people.
In an exclusive radio program interview, Lin defended President Lai’s remarks about the ‘motherland’ and his declaration that the People's Republic of China (PRC) has no right to represent Taiwan. These remarks may have incited Chinese military drills, but Lai’s approach is necessary to clarify misconceptions and foster a unified understanding among Taiwanese citizens, Lin says.
