Due to heavy rains in August and September, northern Thailand is seeing the worst flooding in 30 years. Representative to Thailand Chun-Fu Chang (張俊福) has donated US$100,000 (roughly NT$3.2 million) to the Thai Red Cross Society on behalf of the Taiwan government to assist in disaster relief. In addition, the Taiwanese community in Thailand has raised more than 4.8 million Thai baht (approximately NT$4.7 million or US$145,000) which has also been contributed.
Thai Red Cross Society Secretary-General Tej Bunnag accepted the donation at a ceremony held at the Red Cross headquarters. Chang said in a speech that Thailand is an important regional partner of Taiwan, and the Taiwanese people express their condolences to the Thai families who have lost their homes and loved ones. He said that he hopes the flood victims’ lives will return to normal as soon as possible.
Earlier this year at the 30th World Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce opening ceremony, Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) affirmed Taiwanese businesses for assisting in post-disaster reconstruction and enthusiastically carrying forward the Taiwanese spirit of perseverance overseas, deepening the friendship between Taiwan and Southeast Asian countries and people.
