With escalating tensions between Taiwan and China, there is increasing speculation about whether the Taipei and Shanghai "Twin City Forum" will proceed this year. Established in 2010, the forum typically takes place in July or August. This year, Taipei is set to host the event; however, no official updates have been released, raising concerns about potential delays.
Responding to media inquiries on the matter, Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) said that the rising cross-strait tensions underscore the need for communication and exchanges. He hopes the Twin City Forum will continue, bringing peace and stability to both sides.
Recently, China conducted "Joint Sword-2024B" military exercises around Taiwan. Drills involved the army, navy, air force, and rocket force which operated in the Taiwan Strait and areas to the north, south, and east of Taiwan. Chinese media outlets also reported that China carried out live-fire drills on Niushan Island, which is closest to Taiwan, on Tuesday. As the situation continues to evolve, it remains to be seen whether the Twin City Forum will be held this year.
