National Security Council Secretary-General Joseph Wu (吳釗燮) met with a delegation from the Dutch House of Representatives, led by Foreign Trade and Development Committee Chair Aukje de Vries, on Wednesday. Their discussion included international order, regional issues, societal resilience, and Taiwan-Netherlands relations.
Wu expressed enthusiasm for hosting the largest Dutch legislative delegation to visit Taiwan in recent years and commended the Dutch government for its commitment to upholding freedom of navigation, particularly through the dispatch of warships in the Taiwan Strait in May. He noted that the Dutch House has passed several pro-Taiwan motions, reflecting a growing consensus on Taiwan issues. Wu hopes the Dutch parliament will continue supporting Taiwan.
Wu emphasized that the expansion of Chinese authoritarianism threatens peace in the Taiwan Strait and undermines the status quo in the East and South China Seas, extending its influence to the Pacific, Indian Ocean, and Africa. He urged democratic countries to unite against the erosion of the rules-based international order, especially as cooperation between authoritarian states like China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea strengthens.
De Vries remarked that the delegation consists of key members of the Dutch parliament with longstanding concerns about Taiwan. She expressed excitement about witnessing Taiwan’s democratic values and noted the Netherlands’ interest in Taiwan’s whole-of-society resilience, hoping for enhanced cooperation to strengthen relations between the two countries.
