The New Zealand Institute of International Affairs (NZIIA), a non-governmental independent organization, features Taiwanese foreign policy as their November and December issue cover story. Inside the “Foreign Policy - Taiwan” bimonthly issue is Representative to New Zealand Joanne Ou’s story calling for support for Taiwan’s participation in international organizations.

Ou’s 3,000-word article titled Democracy, Peace and Stability-shared Values of a New Zealand and Taiwan Partnership calls on multiple international institutions including INTERPOL, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), World Health Organization (WHO), and others to support Taiwan’s participation in the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The text also urges the United Nations Secretariat to stop misinterpreting Resolution 2758 from 1971 to exclude both the Taiwanese government and its people from the UN.

The UNFCCC’s 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) takes place in Baku, Azerbaijan, from November 11 to 22 this year. While Taiwan has been excluded from the UNFCCC for many years, Taiwan enacted the Climate Change Response Act and has shown consistent commitment to minimizing its environmental impact, Ou wrote.

On the topic of foreign policy, Ou further explained that Taiwan practices value-based diplomacy with a focus on economic resilience, and that the country has extremely firm beliefs and capabilities to protect national security, freedom, democracy, and the cross-strait status quo.
