Radio Taiwan International’s Chinese-language program host Tu Jie (屠潔) received a special commendation at the 2024 Association for International Broadcasting Award in the Sustainability category on Friday. Her program, “Everyone Has a Seat: From Cultural Venues to Cultural Currency, Taiwan’s Path to Achieving Cultural Equality,” explores how arts and culture venues, in collaboration with the government, are ensuring that people of all identities, ages, genders, regions, and abilities can participate in and enjoy cultural life.
The AIBs 2024, organized by the Association for International Broadcasting (AIB), took place at the prestigious Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) in London on Friday. The event brought together over 230 media professionals from across the globe, celebrating excellence in international broadcasting.
Now in its 20th year, the AIBs awards saw fierce competition, with 147 entries from 25 countries. This year, Rti set a new milestone by earning nominations in three award categories and securing four Presenter Award nominations.
Other Rti nominations included “The Monk and the Gun: Modernisation and Democracy in Bhutan,” produced by Wanson Wang (王善), which was shortlisted for the Arts and Culture Award. Additionally, “HKSAR v. Jimmy Lai,” produced by Iris Hsu (許祐寧), earned a nomination for the Investigative Documentary Award.
Rti presenters Li Yuan-zhen (李沅臻), Huang Hsiu-min (黃脩閔), and Huang Yu-mei (黃玉美) were each nominated for the Emerging Talent Award for their work on Hakka-language programs. Presenter Tseng Wei-min (曾偉旻) also received a nomination for Presenter of the Year, marking the first time Rti has been nominated in this category.
Rti Chairperson Cheryl Lai (賴秀如) led a delegation of nominees to the awards ceremony and presented the Sustainability Program Award on behalf of the Taiwanese national public broadcaster. Lai emphasized that participating in such a globally recognized event not only allows Rti to engage with the world’s best media work but also strengthens relationships with international peers. She noted that the AIBs provides a valuable platform for media leaders worldwide to learn about Taiwan’s development and its ongoing efforts to uphold freedom and democracy.
Throughout the event, Rti received enthusiastic support from media professionals, with many expressing concern for Taiwan’s current situation and admiration for its democratic progress. Lai concluded that the recognition received at the AIBs marked a significant step forward in Rti’s role in raising Taiwan's profile on the global stage.
