The Foreign Ministry on Friday thanked the Czech Chamber of Deputies for speaking up for Taiwan and calling for practical actions to counter China’s misinterpretation and distortion of UN General Assembly Resolution 2758.
The Czech Chamber of Deputies adopted a resolution on Thursday clarifying that UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 only addresses China’s representation at the United Nations. The Czech resolution explicitly states that 2758 does not pertain to Taiwan’s political status or its participation in international organizations. It also rejects China’s claims of sovereignty over Taiwan and calls on Beijing to stop distorting the resolution for political purposes.
The motion was led by Eva Decroix, co-chair of the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (IPAC), and received strong bipartisan support. It advocates for Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international organizations including the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and INTERPOL.
Foreign Minister Jeff Liu (劉永健) says that UN Resolution 2758 does not mention Taiwan, and therefore is unrelated to Taiwan. He adds that the People's Republic of China has no right to use it to claim representation of Taiwan’s 23.5 million people within the UN system.
According to the Foreign Ministry, similar motions have already been passed by legislatures in Australia, the Netherlands, Guatemala, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the European Parliament, following this year’s IPAC annual meeting.
