The government will revise carbon reduction targets for 2030, 2032, and 2035 in accordance with Climate Change Response Act provisions. The relevant task force says it hopes to aim for more ambitious targets using a top-down carbon reduction action plan.
This Wednesday Environment Minister Peng Chi-ming (彭啓明) stated that the government will announce the 2030 reduction target before the end of 2024, and that it’s expected to rise to above 24±1%.
Peng noted the complexity of the simulations and predictions which require involvement from multiple ministries. He says that as the Environment Ministry continues observing the carbon reduction strategies of surrounding countries such as Japan, exact targets for 2032 and 2035 are still being calculated.
Improving air quality is also intertwined with carbon reduction, according to Peng. He says he hopes for better conversion tools that can calculate the degree of improvement in air quality, and anticipates the public becoming more involved in reduced carbon emissions once they are aware of potential benefits.
