Deputy Premier Cheng Li-chun (鄭麗君) says Taiwan needs to enhance disaster prevention mechanisms and climate resilience. During Tuesday's 47th Central Disaster Prevention and Rescue Council meeting, Cheng highlighted the growing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events. She urges the government to learn from past disasters and refine risk management strategies.

Cheng thanked first responders and civilian contributors for their efforts in addressing this year’s natural disasters, including typhoons, earthquakes, and heavy rains. She reviewed expert advisory committee recommendations to strengthen public disaster awareness, expand community preparedness, and promote disaster prevention among small and medium-sized enterprises. She says that these will be included in Taiwan’s 2025 disaster prevention white paper.

The meeting addressed the Central Weather Administration’s strategy for issuing more precise high-wind warnings. Cheng backed the need for improved alerts, particularly after damage caused by Typhoon Krathon and Typhoon Kong-rey. She called for continued advancements in forecasting technology, including AI integration, to provide accurate and timely disaster warnings.

Cheng also called for systemic water management reforms following record rainfall during Typhoon Gaemi. She urged agencies to prioritize flood prevention with evidence-based strategies to better allocate resources. Cheng concluded the meeting by advocating for a comprehensive, all-hazards disaster response plan to strengthen national resilience.
