The New York Times unveiled its list of 52 Places to Go in 2025 on Tuesday with Taiwan’s Alishan being featured as the 19th destination. Celebrated for its unique experience of "riding vintage trains into lush mountains," Alishan stands out as a must-visit spot for travelers seeking both natural beauty and cultural heritage.

The Times praised the historic Alishan Forest Railway, which resumed passenger services last year after 15 years of reconstruction due to typhoon damage and landslides. This 112-year-old narrow-gauge railway stretches 71.4 kilometers, transporting passengers from Chiayi City to the serene, verdant mountains of Alishan. With two daily departures, the red-and-cream vintage trains offer a five-hour journey through breathtaking scenery, stopping at Fen Chi Hu Station, where visitors can savor local specialties such as bento boxes and aiyu jelly desserts. The best time to visit Alishan is from November to April, when the region enjoys less rainfall, enhancing its already stunning landscapes.

While other destinations were also recognized on the list, including Jane Austen’s England in the number one spot, Alishan’s timeless charm and rich history secured its place as a highlight. Each year, The New York Times selects 52 global destinations to inspire readers' travel plans for the year.
