A favorite character has made its debut as the design of Kaohsiung’s mini lantern festival lanterns this year.

Kaohsiung is turning up the cuteness ahead of the 2025 Lantern Festival with its mini lantern design– the adorable Chiikawa, a popular Japanese character. Perched atop a smiling car, Chiikawa’s lovable expression has sparked a great deal of excitement.

The highly anticipated lanterns will be distributed for free on February 8 and 9 at Kaohsiung Port. Locals are already buzzing about it, with one saying how cute they are and another expecting long lines for people to get their hands on them.

For kids in Kaohsiung, there’s no need to worry about missing out. On January 20, schools across the city will give out lanterns to students, making sure everyone gets a little piece of the magic.

Over in Pingtung, their inflatable lantern is also creating a buzz. People lined up last Saturday to get their hands on one. Blow it up and see a cute little snake with its tongue out. And it doubles as a wobbling toy or even a nightlight. One Pintung resident said it can even be used as decoration after the holiday is over.

Taoyuan’s snake lantern can double as a necklace, and New Taipei City has two types of lanterns you can pull, carry, or use as wishing dice.

With all these unique and creative designs, this year’s Lantern Festival is shaping up to be a collector’s dream. Whether you’re in Kaohsiung, Pingtung, or anywhere else, it’s a celebration you won’t want to miss.
