Temples are adopting innovative strategies to draw visitors before the Lunar New Year.

As the Lunar New Year approaches, temples in Yunlin are embracing cultural creativity to attract visitors. One temple has transformed traditional worship by introducing Gashapon vending machines dispensing capsule toys in the form of cute deity figures such as Mazu, Lord Wenchang (Emperor of passing exams), Shen Nong (Deity of Medicine and Herb), and General Black Tiger.

For NT$200 (a little over US$6), visitors can spin the machine and receive one of five collectible deity figurines. Another temple has designed throw pillows that mimic the temple's hanging light lanterns. The pillows read "sleep peacefully" to symbolize tranquility and good fortune.

Temple officials explained the innovative approach aimed to connect with younger generations by offering playful, modern interpretations of traditional religious symbols. The General Black Tiger temple has prepared over 50,000 gacha capsules, hoping to create new interactions between the temple and its followers.

The temple’s secretary says exchanging a gacha figurine can create a unique friendship between believers. These creative merchandise offerings represent temples' adaptability in maintaining cultural relevance while preserving spiritual traditions.
