Taiwan's new anti-fraud laws are helping victims recover stolen funds faster. With virtual currency platforms and police joining forces, restitution now takes just six months.

As fraud case numbers continue to rise in Taiwan, victims are left grappling with one pressing concern: can they recover their money? In the past, restitution involved lengthy mediation and court proceedings, but with the introduction of new anti-fraud legislation last year, the Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) has dramatically sped up the recovery process.

The police recently apprehended members of a fraud ring that stole over NT$6 million (approximately US$192,000) from their victims. One of whom, Mr. W, lost nearly NT$4 million (approximately US$128,000) in an investment scam. He has since recovered over NT$800,000 (approximately US$25,000), providing at least some much-needed relief to cover living expenses.

Fraud rings frequently launder money through virtual currencies to obscure their illegal activities. Thanks to the new laws, exchanges are collaborating with law enforcement to swiftly identify suspicious transactions, notify victims, and return stolen funds directly. Victims need only file a police report and pass identity verification to recover funds within six months.

In the first wave since the law’s implementation, 32 victims reclaimed over NT$11 million (approximately US$352,000), showcasing the improved efficiency of this system.
