The cold front affecting Taiwan has caused a significant amount of snow to accumulate on Mount Hehuan in Nantou County. Snowfall began intermittently around 2 a.m. on Monday, with six centimeters accumulating by morning, according to staff at the Songsyue Lodge, which is located near the mountain’s peak.
The Central Weather Administration (CWA) issued a cold surge advisory for nearly every area in Taiwan at about 10:40 a.m. reminding citizens to take extra care to stay warm. The Highway Bureau also issued a travel warning that a section of Provincial Highway 14 from Cueifeng to Dayuling was closed as a precaution Sunday night due to icy road conditions. Although traffic resumed through this section at 7 a.m. on Monday morning, part of the road is still covered with ice and snow and any vehicles passing through the area must be equipped with snow chains.
Mount Hehuan is one of the most popular places to see snow in Taiwan, as it is not only tall enough for snowfall to be relatively common in the winter months but also more accessible than other snowy peaks in the country.
