As families celebrate the Lunar New Year, the National Fire Agency (NFA) is reminding the public to pay close attention to household appliances and fireworks to ensure accident-free gatherings.

According to the NFA, 24 carbon monoxide poisoning incidents took place in 2024, resulting in four deaths and 59 hospitalizations. The agency states that 21 of these incidents were caused by outdoor water heaters installed in poorly ventilated areas. NFA Director General Jack Hsiao (蕭煥章) says people often close their doors and windows due to the cold weather, and warned how inadequate ventilation can result in carbon monoxide poisoning.

The NFA suggests checking how outdoor gas water heaters are installed, also ensuring that they are free of large amounts of hanging clothing when installed on balconies.

When celebrating the Lunar New Year with firecrackers and fireworks, the NFA advises purchasing products with qualified labels. They maintain that children under the age of 12 must have adult supervision at all times when setting off firecrackers and fireworks, and remind that “flying,” “airborne,” and “throwing” fireworks are prohibited for child use. The NFA urges the public to abide by local regulations regarding the correct times, locations, and methods by which people are allowed to set off fireworks.
