The Sports Administration announced Tuesday the Taiwan Sports Lottery set a record high sales amount of over NT$64.3 billion (or US$1.94 billion). Additionally, the number of betting sessions will be expanded for the Lunar New Year holiday period.
First begun in 2008, the Sports Lottery generated about NT$77 billion (US$2.3 billion) in its first-ever term, which increased to NT$407.8 billion (US$12.4 billion) in the following decade of its second term. Now in its third term or twentieth year, the sales amount for 2024 set a new record high of NT$64.3 billion– with current projections for the total sales at the end of the third term in 2033 to exceed NT$502 billion (or US$15.2 billion).
The record high is not only good fun, but good for the country as well, as all revenue generated by the lottery goes directly to Taiwan’s sports development fund. 2024’s record high alone contributed more than NT$7.03 billion (US$213 million) to the fund.
But the good news doesn’t stop there. Taiwan Sports Lottery Co also announced that it will open single-game and in-play betting during the holiday period. The event will include the NBA, MLB, NHL, and NFL, as well as the top five European soccer leagues.
The Taiwan Sports Lottery authorized is under the Authority of the Education Ministry as per the Sports Lottery Act.
