On Friday, the third day of the Lunar New Year, President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) visited Fengyuan Cih Ji Temple and Lecheng Temple in Taichung to offer prayers. During his speech, he warned of China’s increasing efforts to annex Taiwan and the growing threat of investment scams, urging national unity and vigilance.

Lai stressed that China is using military intimidation and united front tactics to pressure Taiwan. While competition between nations is natural, he emphasized that Taiwan’s sovereignty and democratic way of life must never be compromised. Citing a Justice Ministry report, he highlighted a sharp rise in espionage cases over the past two years, with Chinese agents infiltrating local communities, government agencies, and religious organizations under the pretense of cultural exchange.

He also raised concerns over rampant fraud, revealing that Taiwan faces 500 scam cases daily, with losses exceeding NT$400 million (about US$12 million). Investment scams, particularly those on the messaging app LINE, are among the most severe.

Amid growing global uncertainties, Lai prayed to Mazu, the Goddess of the Sea, for peace, prosperity, and favorable weather, calling for unity and collective efforts to safeguard Taiwan’s security and future.
