During a joint press conference on Wednesday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reaffirmed the importance of Taiwan-Guatemala relations, emphasizing that the United States is committed to strengthening trilateral ties with Guatemala and Taiwan. He stated that Washington aims to expand cooperation beyond diplomacy, particularly in economic development and security.
Rubio attended a working dinner with Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo this Tuesday evening, where discussions focused on combating drug trafficking, countering China’s growing influence, and reinforcing ties with Taiwan. The following morning, he met with Guatemala’s vice president and key cabinet officials to discuss immigration policy and security issues.
The U.S. and Guatemala are also advancing major infrastructure projects, including air, land, and maritime transportation, as well as subway and railway development to improve regional connectivity. Rubio stressed that these initiatives would generate jobs in the short term while positioning Guatemala as a regional economic hub for long-term growth.
Rubio praised Guatemala’s steadfast recognition of Taiwan as a “democratic nation” despite mounting international pressure to change its stance. He reaffirmed that the U.S. will seek opportunities to expand U.S.-Taiwan-Guatemala relations beyond diplomacy, fostering stronger economic, investment, and trade partnerships with Taiwan.
