Nantou County’s Zhushan Zinan Temple adapts their communal event keeping public health in mind.

Nantou County’s Zhushan Zinan Temple (南投縣竹山紫南宮) will hold the “Fa Ding Jiu” (發丁酒) event on February 13, continuing its century-old tradition. But this year, amid rising flu cases, temple authorities have decided to continue distributing food packets instead in the interest of public health.

An annual community event, locals and families would normally gather to make offerings to the local Tudigong. These would then be collected and made into a communal dish of sesame oil chicken, symbolizing shared blessings and prosperity.

However, since the outbreak of the pandemic, the temple authorities have been distributing meal packets instead. On the day of the event, 60,000 packages will be prepared, with each package serving approximately two people.
