The Taiwan Creative Content Agency (TCCA) hosted Taiwan Cinema Night on Monday, alongside the opening of the 75th annual Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale). Taiwan’s Representative to Germany, Shieh Jhy-wey (謝志偉), was joined by several Taiwanese filmmakers at the event, where they exchanged ideas with industry professionals and representatives from around the world.

In his remarks, Shieh warmly welcomed all participants. He noted that the word "movie" is derived from the verb "move," commending Taiwanese filmmakers for traveling thousands of miles from Taiwan to Berlin, much like locomotives, bringing local stories to a global audience.

This year, three Taiwanese films were selected for the Berlinale: the queer crime thriller Silent Sparks (愛作歹), Hé mán (河鰻), and The Trio Hall (三廳電影), along with the international co-production Dreams in Nightmares.

Silent Sparks was selected to compete for the Berlinale’s prestigious Teddy Awards, which honor films that explore LGBTQ+ themes. Emerging Taiwanese actor Huang Guanzhi (黃冠智), who stars in the film, was also present at the event. Huang expressed his excitement about participating in one of the world’s top three film festivals, saying it has always been his dream. He shared his gratitude for the opportunity to visit Berlin with his film crew and engage in discussions with senior producers and directors.

Following Taiwan Cinema Night, these Taiwanese filmmakers will participate in movie premieres and lectures to further showcase the diverse creative perspectives in Taiwanese cinema.
