Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-che (黃偉哲) attended a sealing ceremony for a shipment of milkfish products bound for Australia on Wednesday, noting the success of Tainan’s products breaking into the international market.
Fisherman’s Hometown International’s products gained interest from Australian distributors at a Melbourne food fair last year. The shipment was packed with 1,810 boxes of fish-based products, including fish porridge, fish skin, and fish cakes. The company’s General Manager Hong Zhi-min (洪志民) says previous exports were mostly frozen or fresh milkfish, but these new ready-to-eat products appeal to a broader audience.
Mayor Huang says that while Tainan's agricultural exports have traditionally focused on fruits, the successful entry of fish-based products into Australia is a remarkable achievement. He adds that Australia’s thriving fishing industry and well-established seafood market make the entry of Tainan's products even more impressive.
Tainan’s Agriculture Bureau Director Lee Fang-lin (李芳林) noted the city's government support, providing subsidies for last year’s food fair participation, and expressed hope that more local producers will follow suit and expand Tainan’s agricultural and fishery exports into new markets.
