President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) welcomed Akie Abe, the widow of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, at the Presidential Office on Friday. During their meeting, President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) expressed gratitude for Shinzo Abe’s groundbreaking “Free and Open” Indo-Pacific vision, which has significantly influenced international relations and Taiwan's security.
Akie Abe visited Taiwan for the Halifax International Security Forum (HFX Taipei), where she delivered a keynote speech and met with Lai. The president thanked her for her support of Taiwan and highlighted Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba's recent affirmation of Taiwan Strait stability following his summit with U.S. President Trump. He noted how Ishiba continues to uphold Abe's vision by promoting Taiwan's international participation.
President Lai emphasized Abe's enduring legacy, highlighting that his strategic vision has become a common goal among democratic nations worldwide. He specifically mentioned how Akie Abe has continued her late husband's ideals, providing a "gentle yet firm strength" for regional peace and prosperity. The President was particularly touched by her advocacy for Taiwan during her December visit to the United States at the invitation of the Trumps.
In her remarks, Akie Abe recalled how then-Vice President Lai personally paid his respects following her husband's passing—a gesture of friendship she vowed to never forget. She reiterated her commitment to advancing Shinzo Abe’s legacy by further strengthening the close Japan-Taiwan relationship, as both nations collaborate with like-minded countries to counter authoritarian expansion and promote global peace.
