The Foreign Ministry maintains that the United States’ position of defending the status quo has been, and will remain, the same and plans to continue close cooperation with the U.S. to strengthen ties as well as Taiwan’s self defense capabilities.

In a recent interview, Rubio reiterated that the United States’ long-standing commitment to Taiwan via both the Taiwan Relations and the Six Assurances Act has been consistent across multiple administrations– that the U.S. opposes any unilateral change to the status quo through force, threats or coercion. He again expressed his support for Taiwan’s participation in international organizations, stating that China cannot represent Taiwan’s views and interests in these international arenas.

These statements of support follow similar remarks from Rubio to Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi (王毅) about China’s coercive actions against Taiwan in the South China Sea, as well as joint statements from Japanese, South Korean, and U.S. foreign ministers on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference underscoring the irrefutable importance of peace and stability in the region. The U.S. State Department also recently updated the “Current State of U.S.-Taiwan Relations” on their website reaffirming their commitment to Taiwan's security, and removed the phrase “we do not support Taiwan independence”.

Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hsiao Kuang-wei (蕭光偉) thanked the United States for their continued support, demonstrable emphasis on regional security, and abidance of both the Taiwan Relations Act and Six Assurances. The Foreign Ministry stated that Taiwan will continue to cooperate with the United States to build a mutually beneficial partnership that strengthens Taiwan's self-defense capabilities and jointly maintains the status quo in the Taiwan Strait, promoting peace, stability, and prosperity in both nations.
