The Foreign Ministry welcomes the first group of European Parliament members visiting Taiwan this year. According to a press release issued on Monday, a delegation of European Parliament members is currently in Taiwan from February 24 to 28. The delegation is led by the Renew Europe Group Vice President Ivars Ijabs, and includes Hannes Heide, Arkadiusz Mularczyk, and Vladimir Prebilič.
According to the ministry, the delegation will meet with Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) and attend a banquet with Foreign Deputy Minister François Chih-chung Wu (吳志中). Additionally, they will engage in discussions with Taiwan’s Legislature and various government agencies, as well as representatives from civil society groups and think tanks. Topics of discussion will include the current situation and future prospects of Taiwan's economy and politics, Taiwan-EU economic relations, geopolitics, and technological innovation, with a focus on exploring further opportunities for cooperation.
The ministery also highlighted that on January 30, the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET) approved resolutions on the implementation of the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) and the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) for the 2024 annual reports. These reports express support for peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, opposition to unilateral military aggression aimed at altering the status quo across the Strait, condemnation of China’s continued distortion of the UN 2758 Resolution, and calls for the EU to assist Taiwan in strengthening its security resilience.
The ministry sincerely thanks the European Parliament for its steadfast support of Taiwan through concrete actions. Taiwan will continue to collaborate with like-minded European partners to further strengthen democratic resilience and build a solid, reciprocal alliance network based on the existing foundation.
