Cyclists around Taipei are reminded to follow traffic rules or else they will face penalties for violations.
Video script:
It has become quite common for many commuters in Taiwan to use bicycles or YouBikes to get around, but confusion remains about traffic rules. Recently, a cyclist was fined for riding a YouBike across a zebra crossing, learning only then that bicycles must be walked, not ridden, on crosswalks.
The Taipei City Police Traffic Division explains bicycles are classified as slow vehicles so should not be ridden on zebra crossings. Violators face fines of NT$300 (US$9) to NT$1,200 (US$37). Cyclists must also follow traffic lights and not pedestrian signals when crossing streets.
In 2024, 450 cases were recorded of cyclists violating road markings, up from 290 cases in 2023. Other common violations include riding on building entryways, riding against the traffic, and failing to yield to pedestrians.
So here’s a friendly reminder for cyclists to keep the rules in mind because if you “brake” the rules, you pay the price.
