Team Taiwan was fined US$20,000 (about NT$660,000) via the Major League Baseball (MLB) for unauthorized use of electronic devices during the World Baseball Classic Qualifiers, and warned that the next infringement could result in disqualification. The Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) verified the incident, and will pay the fine.

According to tournament rules, during a game, no member of any participating team (including players, coaches, guards, translators, and other relevant personnel) may possess or use electronic devices in the rest area, bullpen, or on the playing field.

The CPBL responded Sunday, explaining that a few personnel assisting with transportation violated the rules by using mobile phones in offices where equipment was stored. The CPBL agreed to pay the fine, and make adjustments to avoid future violations.

A previous violation occurred during the team’s match against Spain when security discovered a large discrepancy between the number of people entering the lounge, and the 39 certified to be there. They were warned that those without certificates, such as personal guards and doctors, were not allowed to enter the lounge. Before the game the following day, in addition to strictly checking the team’s documents, the MLB conducted a room check, which uncovered mobile phones, computers, printers, and other devices.

World Baseball Classic Chairman Jim Small issued a stern reprimand, warning that the team may be disqualified in the event of future or repeat violations.
