On an episode of the podcast “Chatting with Han After Work” (下班瀚你聊) published this Sunday, Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) spoke about Taiwan’s situation with its 12 official diplomatic allies, noting a need to pay special attention to its relationship with Haiti and the Holy See.
Lin says overall, Taiwan’s relationship with its 12 diplomatic allies is stable. Haiti’s political situation may be turbulent, but Taiwan will continue providing assistance during the country’s difficult times, says Lin. The foreign minister noted that though Pope Francis is hoping to interact more with China, he’s still confident in the stability of Taiwan’s relationship with the Holy See.
Since taking office, Lin has actively implemented policies of solidifying and honoring diplomatic allies. Recently, Lin also proposed expanding such relations. He noted that his work prioritizes taking good care of the current 12 diplomatic allies, so he will not force it, but let it develop naturally.
Lin said there are countries in mind, but that the partnership must be entered into happily and willingly in order to last. He added that the government would rather wait until the time is right than rush into a partnership that ends up being a temporary ally or victim of the CCP’s poaching.
