President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) said Tuesday that Taiwan and the U.S. maintain close communication channels and cooperative relationships while meeting with recipients of various national awards.
Lai says both sides will continue to deepen their development in artificial intelligence, advanced semiconductors, and other technologies. He says there is strong communication between the two nations and reiterated that Taiwan will enhance trade and industrial cooperation, particularly in AI and advanced semiconductor technology development, while increasing investments and procurement from the U.S.
In his address, President Lai noted that Taiwan’s economy grew by 4.3% last year, reaching a three-year high. However, he acknowledged that global economic risks are expected to persist in the coming year. Despite these challenges, he says that risks and challenges also bring opportunities. Taiwan occupies a critical position in the global supply chain and stands to benefit significantly from the accelerated expansion of technologies like AI.
The president says the "Three Major Programs for Investment in Taiwan", which have been extended to 2027, are expanding to include global Taiwanese businesses and foreign investors. These programs focus on five trusted industries: semiconductors, artificial intelligence, the military sector, security control, and next-generation communications, along with the service and healthcare industries. Lai adds that the government will continue to support small and medium enterprises with an NT$11.6 billion (US$352 million) development plan this year to assist with digital and net-zero transformation.
