Kaohsiung is gearing up to start the 2025 National Indigenous Games this month with a fiery ceremony.

Elders of Kaohsiung’s unique Indigenous Hla’alua tribe (拉阿魯哇族) lit a torch and cauldron to announce the start of the 2025 National Indigenous Games this Tuesday. The games will officially begin following an eight-day torch relay on March 21.

Kaohsiung’s Commission of Indigenous Affairs Chairperson Abus Bainkinung (阿布斯) commented that beyond the city’s government working hard to hold the games in Kaohsiung, multiple Indigenous district offices and local representatives are all joining hands to welcome competitors from across Taiwan.

The Sports Development Bureau is incorporating local tourism itineraries to attract more participation, including three routes especially relating to Indigenous culture: A purple butterfly tour in Maolin, a firefly tour in Namasia, and a cherry blossom aiyu tour in the Taoyuan District.

Just like that, competitors from across Taiwan are fired up and ready for the National Indigenous Games.
